Rainy Tuesday

What a rainy day! The boys and girls are working hard in their French lessons so I thought I would share a few photos of today's French class.

Chief came to visit me last night after the children left-she likes to make herself comfortable on our class couch.

A few reminders for this week:

-an information form came home last night regarding our trip to Fort Langley Tuesday 6th October (*you do not need to return anything as the trip is covered by the form you signed at the beginning of the year)
-The children have a Spelling Quiz on Wednesday on Words in Context: Numerals
-The children have a Social Studies Test on Thursday on Mapping and Geography

Have a lovely day ,

Terry Fox Run!

Today, Friday 25th September, the children ran the Terry Fox Run at Wentworth. They all gave a super effort and ran or walked for 30 minutes with big smiles in the gorgeous weather. If you wish to make a donation, you may do so online (see email that was sent from the school or the school website for information).

Many thanks to all the parents who came to Meet the Teacher last night. I hope you found it informative. It was really nice to meet the few of you I had not yet met.

Reminders:
  • Library books are due on Monday (28th September)
  • If you wish to order photos and you have not yet returned your order form, please send it in on Monday
Have a wonderful weekend :)

Lots of painting and Learning about Latitude and Longitude!

On Friday, the children created stunning paintings of their interpretation of the Emily Carr quote: "A British Columbia way of seeing.". We had a lively class discussion on what the quote might mean and the boys and girls enjoyed talking about their ideas based on their own individual "British Columbia way of seeing".

In Social Studies, we have been learning about latitude and longitude and using coordinates to find positions on a map. The boys and girls enjoy our class competitions on the SmartBoard to see which team can locate countries on the world map using coordinates.

Some reminders:

-TOMORROW (Thursday 24th September) is Meet the Teacher Evening at 6:30pm

-School Photo Orders are due back by Friday

-The Terry Fox Run at Wentworth is Friday (*children to come to school in PE clothes as per normal on Friday with uniform to change into)

We Love Reading and Two Stars and a Wish

I noticed that the boys and girls in 5S LOVE to read so I thought I would add a few photos of the children enjoying reading in our classroom. Today, the children worked on a peer-editing activity called "Two Stars and a Wish". They read a partner's paragraph and gave it two stars (two great things about it) and one wish (some constructive criticism). This was a really positive experience for the children because they felt good about praising their parter's writing and thinking of kind ways to suggest improvements.

Our Classroom

s

The classroom is looking super thanks to the efforts of the children in 5S! The room is decorated with their gorgeous self portraits, wonderful maps of Canada, fantastic paragraphs on targets for the term and, of course, their collaborative version of "Starry Night". Well done for all the hard work so far, 5S! I am proud of you.

Starry Night Collaborative Art Project

We have had a fantastic week in 5S! This afternoon, the children worked on a collaborative art project involving re-creating Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Night". We read a story about Van Gogh, discussed his techniques and how he expressed himself artistically through use of colour. The children then each received a cut out square from a poster of "Starry Night". They used oil pastels to create their portion of the masterpiece. When we put them all together we will have our very own 5S Starry Night. I was very proud of how diligently the children worked on their pieces and the finished products are wonderful.

Reminders:
-"Meet the Teacher" Evening is Thursday 24th September at 6:30pm
-The Terry Fox Run at Wentworth is on Friday 25th September (you will have received an email about online donations)
-comfort kits are due Friday 18th September-see detailed instructions on page 10 of "Prep Talk"

I hope to see many of you at the BBQ this evening. Enjoy the fabulous weather!

Happy Birthday Collingwood!

Today, September 10th, 2009, marks the 25th birthday of Collingwood School. Happy Birthday Collingwood! The children participated in a celebratory assembly during which they sang the Collingwood song, "Vision to Reality". They were absolutely brilliant and made all the Grade 5 Teachers extremely proud. At the end of the assembly balloons were dropped on the students and much fun was had by all.

A few reminders:
  • Your child should come to school dressed in his or her PE strip tomorrow and bring their uniform to change into afterwards.
  • You will find a laminated copy of your child's timetable in the inside clear front pocket of his or her agenda.
  • "Meet the Teacher" Night for Grade 5 is Thursday, 24th September at 6:30pm
Enjoy the fantastic weather!

Week 2

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to remind you to send in your child's PE strip tomorrow as they will change for Spirit after the Assembly. As it is Wednesday tomorrow, your child should come to school in his or her #1 uniform for Assembly. Many thanks.

A quick word on homework--Grade 5 homework should be roughly 50 minutes to one hour and we are currently building up to that. I wanted to mention that if your child works consistently for one hour and the homework is not finished, please just initial the agenda and it is OK to stop there. The incomplete work can be finished either at school or at the weekend when we do not usually assign homework.

Enjoy the evening!

What a Week!

We have had a fabulous first week in 5S! The children have settled in brilliantly and are connecting with new friends and old. We have started to do some work on spelling and vocabulary and we have read and talked about current events. The children also worked on some Canadian Geography and started creating self portraits. In music, the Grade 5's are practicing the Collingwood School Song (see photo) to prepare for upcoming assemblies. Needless to say, we have had quite a busy first week!

Some "housekeeping" items:
-You will find your child's timetable in his or her Agenda tonight
-A reminder regarding Comfort Kits: Updated or new Comfort Kits are due back to the school on 18th September. Detailed information regarding the Comfort Kits can be found in the Prep Talk Newsletter, page 10.
-Starting next week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, the children should come to school dressed in their PE strip and bring their uniform in a bag.
-On Wednesdays, the children should come to school dressed in their #1 uniform for assembly and bring their PE strip in a bag for Spirit.
-If your child is going on a playdate, please could you email me or send in a note just so I know that it is authorized by you. Many thanks in advance

I hope you have a lovely long weekend. See you next week!
