Self Assessment Using Our Student-Generated Rubric

Today in Writers Workshop, each child assessed a paragraph that he or she had written on Tuesday. In order to assess their work, the children used a rubric that we generated as a class based on the BC Performance Standards "Quick Scale" for assessing Writing to Communicate Ideas and Information. Prior to this lesson, we looked at all of the points on the BC "Quick Scale" and the children put them into their own words. We now have a class rubric that the children understand (as they helped create it) and can use to assess their own writing. The boys and girls told me they found that "marking" their own work was difficult :) but that using the rubric helped them to notice their writing strengths and weaknesses. The photos show the children sharing with a partner after using their rubric.

Friday before Thanksgiving

We had an interesting day in 5S with lots of boys and girls in Victoria for the soccer tournament. Go Collingwood! We hope both teams had loads of fun.

This afternoon at school, the children drew pictures or diagrams of Fort Langley and wrote some information they learned about the Fort and its role in the Development of Canada. We had a great day.

Trip to Fort Langley

WHAT A DAY!

We had a fabulous day at Fort Langley on our first trip of the year. The children were split into three groups: the otters, the beavers, and the raccoons for a guided tour of the Fort. They panned for gold, learned about blacksmithing, saw an old store house and much more. Many, many thanks to our super parent volunteers: Bryan's mum, Katie's mum, and Arran's dad. We has such a great day. Enjoy the photos!

PS Just a reminder that the Collingwood School Thanksgiving Project is on this week (Oct 5-9) and your child may bring in non-perishable food items as donations. The food will be taken to The Harvest Project for distribution on Friday morning so please bring in your donations throughout the week. If making a monetary donation is easier, cheques may be made payable to Harvest Project.

Our First Trip Tomorrow

Dear Parents,

Here are a few reminders for tomorrow regarding our trip to Fort Langley:

• The children may wear weather appropriate "civvies" tomorrow. (*We will be both indoors and outdoors so layering is beneficial.)
• Please send your child with a snack, drink, and pack lunch (*note: there are no microwave facilities available).
• We will be arriving back at school in time for regular dismissal time and any afterschool co-curriculars.

It is going to be a fantastic trip!

Using Laptops to Research The Group of Seven

To follow up on the children's homework assignment last night, we watched a DVD on the Group of Seven and then the children used laptops to search for more information on the Group of Seven. Each child found their favourite Group of Seven image and we toured around the classroom pretending we were visiting an art gallery :) We will be doing more work on The Group of Seven in conjunction with our Development of Canada unit in Social Studies.

Some reminders for next week:

• Please look over and sign your child's Socials Unit Test (in their bags tonight) and return to school on Monday
• Our trip to Fort Langley is on Tuesday 6th October. The children should be dressed in weather appropriate clothing. We will be both indoors and outdoors so layering would be beneficial.

Rainy Tuesday

What a rainy day! The boys and girls are working hard in their French lessons so I thought I would share a few photos of today's French class.

Chief came to visit me last night after the children left-she likes to make herself comfortable on our class couch.

A few reminders for this week:

-an information form came home last night regarding our trip to Fort Langley Tuesday 6th October (*you do not need to return anything as the trip is covered by the form you signed at the beginning of the year)
-The children have a Spelling Quiz on Wednesday on Words in Context: Numerals
-The children have a Social Studies Test on Thursday on Mapping and Geography

Terry Fox Run!

Today, Friday 25th September, the children ran the Terry Fox Run at Wentworth. They all gave a super effort and ran or walked for 30 minutes with big smiles in the gorgeous weather. If you wish to make a donation, you may do so online (see email that was sent from the school or the school website for information).

Many thanks to all the parents who came to Meet the Teacher last night. I hope you found it informative. It was really nice to meet the few of you I had not yet met.
