Today in Writers Workshop, each child assessed a paragraph that he or she had written on Tuesday. In order to assess their work, the children used a rubric that we generated as a class based on the BC Performance Standards "Quick Scale" for assessing Writing to Communicate Ideas and Information. Prior to this lesson, we looked at all of the points on the BC "Quick Scale" and the children put them into their own words. We now have a class rubric that the children understand (as they helped create it) and can use to assess their own writing. The boys and girls told me they found that "marking" their own work was difficult :) but that using the rubric helped them to notice their writing strengths and weaknesses.
