Many thanks to Katie's mum, Heidi's mum for helping at the party. Thank you also to all the mums who sent in treats for the children and to Arran's mum and Jessica's mum for helping to set up. Enjoy the photos and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

PUMPKINS!

We had a super afternoon of pumpkin carving in 5S! Our parent volunteers each looked after a table of scooping and carving children. The boys and girls were so incredibly creative and did a fantastic job carving. The pumpkins will be on display at Capilano Suspension Bridge from Thursday. The children were given a complimentary pass to the Suspension Bridge with an information sheet on the pumpkin display.
Many, many thanks to Bella's mum, Leo's mum, Jessica's mum, Derek's mum, Helena's mum, and Heidi's mum for all of their help.

Group of Seven and Poppies

We have had a busy and productive last few weeks in art in 5S. The children worked on recreating Group of Seven pieces using a collage technique. The boys and girls had to decide how to represent the images, colours, composition of the original painting using only coloured construction paper and their own creativity. Their work looks fantastic and it is on display in the classroom. The children also got a head-start on some artwork surrounding a Remembrance Day theme. They have started AMAZING painting of poppies in an unusual layout. They used a cardboard pieces to paint instead of brushes to create a different effect.

It is a busy week with Halloween and lots of sporting events. On Friday, the children can bring $2 to support UNICEF and for doing this, they may dress in civvies for the morning. Since we have gym, this will mean coming to school in gym strip (as usual) and then changing into civvies for the rest of the morning. Then, at lunch, the boys and girls will change into their costumes :)

Self Assessment Using Our Student-Generated Rubric

Today in Writers Workshop, each child assessed a paragraph that he or she had written on Tuesday. In order to assess their work, the children used a rubric that we generated as a class based on the BC Performance Standards "Quick Scale" for assessing Writing to Communicate Ideas and Information. Prior to this lesson, we looked at all of the points on the BC "Quick Scale" and the children put them into their own words. We now have a class rubric that the children understand (as they helped create it) and can use to assess their own writing. The boys and girls told me they found that "marking" their own work was difficult :) but that using the rubric helped them to notice their writing strengths and weaknesses. The photos show the children sharing with a partner after using their rubric.

Friday before Thanksgiving

We had an interesting day in 5S with lots of boys and girls in Victoria for the soccer tournament. Go Collingwood! We hope both teams had loads of fun.

This afternoon at school, the children drew pictures or diagrams of Fort Langley and wrote some information they learned about the Fort and its role in the Development of Canada. We had a great day.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends. See you next week.
